My Ticket to Paris

Eat, Pray, Lust — With a Little More Eating and a Little Less Praying

October 17, 2011

This spring I am going to go to France for a month. A lot of people have asked why I am going. “Nick, have you always wanted to go there?” “Do you love France?” “Have you been there before?” No, no, and no.

My thinking is this:

  1. I don’t have a wife or kids. Nothing to tie me down.
  2. I have a month of vacation saved up and I am reaching my limit.
  3. Over the past few years I have fallen in love with French food. A few meals at Café Presse, Café Campagne, and Le Gourmand have convinced me that this is heaven.
  4. Over the past few years I have fallen in love with French wines.
  5. In graduate school, I had to present to the incoming French doctorate students, where I spoke to them in very poor French. Mind you, these people are studying the French language for a doctorate degree. They laughed politely at my attempts. I know this is really not a reason to go to France but a funny story.
  6. If this life is the only opportunity we have on the merry-go-round of life, why not do something that will impact my life forever.
  7. I am turning 30 and I am feeling old.

Some final thoughts.

  1. I am planning on writing about it. And I am hoping not to have my writing sound like Oh-this-is-so-amazing-everyone-should-do-this-look-how-cool-I-am. I want to write honestly about my time there and what it means to me as a person. So please let me know if I get too full of myself.
  2. Getting my passport was already an adventure. But I won’t bore you with the details.
  3. I do want to eat amazing food.
  4. Sadly, due to timing and an amazing airline deal ($750 tickets for Seattle to Paris, round trip), I think I am going to be spending my actual 30th birthday alone in Paris.
  5. I wouldn’t be opposed to falling in love with some French girl and marrying her.
  6. I don’t speak any French.
