Untitled – January 30, 2006

The Oscars came out this morning. There were some surprises in the selections and some snubs. I will provide some advice on the movies I have seen:

Brokeback Mountain – You heard it here first, Brokeback Mountain will win best picture. This is a great movie. Every scene is an American painting. Heath Ledger is fantastic and if it was not for Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, Ledger would win best actor. It makes you wonder why Ledger’s agent ever let him do A Knights Tale. This movie is more than the clichĂ© of the gay cowboy movie. You will not be disappointed if you see this movie.

Capote – This is a great film. I cannot believe how good Philip Seymour Hoffman is in this movie. The movie is based on Truman Capote. Go see the movie and afterward you will want to read Capote’s book.

Good Night and Good Luck – This movie is a commentary on our times – even though it is about the McCarthy hearings. This movie follows Edward Murrow and how he stood up to Senator McCarthy. This is a great movie. At the end of the film, the entire audience in my theatre cheered. This movie has some heavy hitters in it – Clooney, Robert Downey Jr, and Jeff Daniels.

Walk the Line – See this movie. I thought it was great. This movie is about Johnny Cash and June Carter. I cannot believe that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did the singing in this movie – it is amazing. Reese Witherspoon will win best actress. See this biopic movie.

Junebug – This film has nominated best supporting actress Amy Adams in it. She gave a great performance as a bright-eyed pregnant country girl. It worth adding this film to your netflix.

I guess my advice is – see all these movies. It will be worth it.
