Last night we had a “Surprise Going Away / Birthday Party” for my great friend Dani. She is leaving for Uganda Africa for her internship. I remember seeing Dani from a distance during the Evans School open house back in April 2004. I was very intimidated by her. She had her hair in two ponytails, wore a great looking skirt and walked with this amazing confidence. She has the biggest heart I have every seen. She feels bad when she does not have money for the homeless and she takes a genuine interest in people. I am truly amazed by all this because she has been sober for a long time now.

Dani could best describe the party last night by saying “wow, it is so weird to see all these people together who don’t know each other.” Her family and friends, both old and new, were all there to wish her well. Her brother Luc instructed us to draw a picture of Dani to give to her. We shared stories, laughed and cried. People sang karaoke and everyone sang Hey Jude.

Moments like these reenergize the soul. Often times in life, we get so focused on the details and the monotony. We forget to have fun and reflect on how people have influenced our lives. Life moves so fast and if we close our eyes for only a moment, we may miss the most important things to us.
